The Nose Knows

With the holidays coming up, everyone is pulling out their favorite stretch-waisted pants. This annual hunt for the roomiest pair that will give us the most flexibility for turkey consumption may be a bit more difficult this year than in 2019.
According to a Harvard Health Publishing article, the jokes about the “COVID 15” (a nod to the notorious “freshman 15” weight gain) may be true. A study of 15 million patient health records revealed that 39% of patients gained weight over the course of the COVID-19 arrival and subsequent shutdown. Of those, the majority (27%) gained 2.5 to 12.5 pounds and the remaining patients (12%) gained more than 12.5 pounds.
Various psychological analyses of this phenomenon have surely been done and those studies released by now… but as I read that study, I had to chuckle at a possible explanation I overheard recently. Commenting on his weight gain, the gentleman explained: “Well I had to take a COVID test every couple hours,” then he laughed, “I had to eat something to make sure I could still taste!”
It was a humorous and lighthearted explanation, a reference to the common COVID-19 symptom of a loss of taste. I didn’t want to break it to him that he could’ve saved some pounds by doing a smell test instead! In fact, as much as eighty percent of what we taste is thanks to our sense of smell.
Smell matters more than you think. When it comes to facilities, we often get caught up with one of the five senses — sight — to the neglect of the other equally-impactful senses. But the nose knows a desirable building from an undesirable one. Perhaps you can even recall entering a building and being assaulted by a bad odor. Very likely you avoided visiting that facility in the future.
At Sonlight Cleaning Services, we can get you set up with Jan San supplies that promote pleasing aromas (such as fragrance machines and refills). Some cleaning companies stop at that, but these measures alone can mask a bad odor rather than eradicate it. Bad odors are caused by bacteria which, if you’ve read any of our many blogs about disinfecting, you know we can attack head on!
Don’t let an unpleasant scent in your facility be cause for losing clients, visitors, or patients. Give Sonlight Cleaning Services a call today.
