Night classes. As a college student, I always had a love/hate relationship with these once-a-week courses. In theory, it’s a good plan–squeeze three credit hours into a marathon class session late one evening of the week. In practice, it’s a little bit tougher when you’ve got an eight o’clock class the same day or (almost worse) an early-morning class the following day. Once the sun went down and the professor had been lecturing past the two-hour mark, it was just plain hard to stay focused!
My college campus was a unique one. The university, once situated on a land-locked piece of land in the middle of downtown, made the bold move to the “outskirts” where they purchased an existing property. This meant that most of the rooms used as classrooms were originally used for, well, not classrooms. Almost every room had an entire wall of windows. During the day, this was a bit distracting because you could see everyone walking by. At night, it was somewhat erie because only the “after-hours” lights were on and the normally-buzzing hallways were relatively dim.
One of my favorite “stay awake” strategies during these late-night classes was to watch the night custodians. With hundreds of students and faculty traversing the halls each day, it is no wonder that these energetic individuals had their work cut out for them every evening. Since there were no other people in the building besides my night class, after dark, this was their domain.
The team swooped in with janitorial carts, mops, vacuums, and “slippery when wet” signage. Vacuum the stairs, mop the hallways, clean the bathrooms, restock the paper goods, sanitize the handrails (I had never stopped to consider how many hands touch those handrails in a day!), dust the railing below the handrails, wash the windows, dust the light fixtures… oh my, how quickly they moved!
By the time I arrived the next morning for that 8:00am class, the campus literally sparkled. I am so proud to call such a beautiful, well-maintained campus my alma mater.
