This mid-1990s educational television series is seeing a resurgence in popularity thanks to its inclusion in Netflix’s TV show lineup. If you guessed “Magic School Bus,” you get a gold star!
This children’s classic is about an elementary school class, their eccentric yet winsome teacher Ms. Frizzle, and — of course! — a magic school bus. In every episode, this truly exceptional bus transforms itself (and the class with it) into whatever contraption Ms. Frizzle needs to teach the day’s lesson. From very big to very small, the magic school bus could do it all!
I tell you this to set the stage for today’s topic: let’s talk carpets. At surface level, most commercial grade carpets are designed to look great no matter how much abuse they have faced. Unlike residential carpet, which is designed primarily for aesthetic and comfort, commercial-grade carpet is designed for durability and longevity.
Commercial carpet has a much shorter pile and tighter looping than residential carpet. Typically made of nylon, olefin, or polypropylene, this workhorse floor covering can last as long as 15 years when properly maintained. Daily vacuuming is essential and high-traffic areas (such as the middle of hallways) or areas prone to dirt accumulation (such as entryways) should optimally be vacuumed throughout the day.
Now imagine yourself hopping into Ms. Frizzle’s school bus with me as we shrink down and dive into those tightly-woven fibers of commercial grade carpets. Below the surface, you’ll see the structure of the carpet fibers. You’ll also notice that unlike residential carpet, most commercial carpet backing systems have a waterproof layer to prevent spills from reaching the subfloor.
You will also quickly notice that dirt that has made its way beyond the top layer of those tightly woven fibers and is stacking up on top of the carpet backing. While 15 years sounds like a wonderfully long life for a commercial carpeted floor, that longevity will not be achieved if this below-the-surface pile of dirt is allowed to grow. This is where hot water extraction comes in.
Sonlight Cleaning Services provides hot water extraction carpet cleaning that will leave your carpets looking their very best and prolong the life of your floor coverings. While vacuuming is beneficial, they only clean the uppermost layers of the carpet fibers. As the name suggests, hot water extraction shoots hot water into the carpet which is then immediately extracted by the cleaning machine, lifting dirt and oil-based residue with it. Hop in Ms. Frizzle’s bus after this type of deep cleaning and you’d see a very different below-the-surface scene!
