How Often Should It Be Cleaned?

Fri, 03/01/2019 - 18:57 -- Anonymous (not verified)

Cleaning frequency is… well… a frequent topic! No one wants to overpay for unnecessary services but you also don’t want to venture into the other side of the spectrum and discover that your facilities are noticeably dirty between cleanings.

It’s the careful balance between running out of milk and letting the carton go sour. It’s the fine line between wearing a shirt that’s too baggy and one that’s too tight. Finding the right cleaning schedule is a careful balance! That’s why today we’re going to talk about determining cleaning frequency in your commercial space.

For the sake of ease, let’s break it down into a few simple categories:

  • Bathrooms
  • Floors
  • Things that collect dust
  • Windows

When it comes to cleaning frequency, the type of facility matters less than the number of people that facility hosts on any given day. For example, even though a school and a church might have the same maximum occupancy, a school (which will have the same number of people on campus five days per week) and a church (which will have most of its activity on a weekend) will require very different cleaning schedules.

A general guideline to get you started thinking about each of these categories is as follows:

  • Bathrooms - For sanitation and hygiene reasons, bathrooms should likely get the most frequent cleanings in your facilities. At minimum, bathrooms should be cleaned once daily. For higher-traffic buildings, your bathrooms may need upwards of ten cleanings per day. And, again, for places such as schools and churches (to use the example above), cleaning frequency may look different on weekdays versus weekends.
  • Floors - Both carpets and hard floors require sweeping, mopping and/or vacuuming any day they will have foot traffic. Floors additionally require monthly or bi-weekly preventative deep cleaning.
  • Things that collect dust - Dusting of all horizontal surfaces should be done on a weekly basis, at minimum. Dusting of vertical surfaces (such as sides of desks and file cabinets) can be done less frequently.
  • Windows - The required frequency of window cleaning depends on your type of business. Some facilities can go as long as six months between cleanings while others should be cleaned as often as every two weeks.

If your head is spinning with all of these variables, that’s pretty normal.
