Special Considerations During Cold, Wet Winters

Fri, 02/22/2019 - 14:16 -- mwade

When overnight temperatures dip consistently into the low thirties and the chance of precipitation is almost constant, it’s safe to say that this is indeed a cold, wet winter in north Texas. The so-called “polar vortex” further to the north seems to have everyone a little bit on edge! Dallas and Fort Worth business owners and organization managers have no doubt taken appropriate precautions to prepare their employees, teams, and clients for the possibility of ice and snow days. You’ve prepared your people, but have you prepared your place of business?

Today we’re going to address the necessary steps you should take to get your building(s) ready to greet the wintry weather like a true northerner.

The first step is to ensure your pipes are protected. Many homeowners respond as if by reflex to the weatherman saying, “It might freeze tonight!” We amble to our garages, grab the faucet cover and pipe insulation and head outside. But if you carry the responsibility for also caring for a church, school, business, or other commercial facility, it’s important to remember to complete this step there, as well. Even though none of us wants the worst to happen, sometimes we make mistakes and need to be prepared for emergency situations. If you walk into work one day to find that the pipes have burst and you’re now standing in a soggy entryway, never fear (as long as you’ve got your phone near)! Call 877-388-3878--that’s the direct number for Sonlight Cleaning Services. We are experienced in carpet cleaning and flood restoration and will have your floors looking good as new in no time.

The second step is to protect your floors from salt stains. Whether you find an appropriate amount of caution or a humorous commentary on “how Texans winter,” as soon as the mercury drops, TxDOT begins dropping salt and sand on the roads. When mixed with moisture, this creates quite a mess on vehicles, sidewalks, and (if you’re not careful) your floors. Salt stains on commercial carpets are nothing to joke about. Snow-melt products have a high pH level (alkaline) and when mixed with your everyday cleaners (also typically alkaline), a chalky white residue is left behind. The best offense is a good defense. Lay down additional entryway mats. If you don’t have a day porter service already, now is the time to start. A day porter can vacuum up salt and snow-melt products throughout the day. It is far preferable to remove these products as they are tracked in and before they can be ground further into the carpet or flooring due to foot traffic.

Finally, after the temperatures have steadily climbed back up out of the 30s, nip the problem in the bud by calling Sonlight Cleaning Services to have your sidewalks and parking lots power washed to remove any leftover salt or sand.
