Back To School Basics

Fri, 08/31/2018 - 14:17 -- Laura M. Pulliam

As Facebook feeds fill with the obligatory “first-day" snapshots, it's apparent that another school year is officially in session. Mothers and fathers everywhere send their children off with either relief or grief (or sometimes a mixture of the two--especially when their students are at the very beginning or very end of their academic career). It’s safe to say that for every glistening eye there is also another parent breathing a sigh of relief as the flurry of summer activity settles down into the relatively predictable rhythm of the school year. But for those seasoned parents, another more ominous thought is in the back of their minds... because they know that another season is fast approaching…

GERM SEASON.

There’s just something about the summers that promotes a carefree attitude when it comes to matters of hygiene. Running around in bare feet, eating watermelon on the front porch, splashing in the pool, playing in the grass… it’s no wonder that a cavalier attitude toward cleanliness is cultivated in those hot summer months. By the time school is back in session, parents and educators begin bracing themselves for the new vocabulary--seemingly on repeat--they will use to reinvigorate the hygiene efforts that were undone during the previous three months.

“Cover your mouth! Use a tissue! Wash your hands!” These words seem almost foreign against the backdrop of a child’s carefree summer. Where students’ hygiene efforts falter, Sonlight Cleaning Services comes to the rescue.Last year’s flu season began in October and peaked in January. Cold and flu season hits the Dallas-Fort Worth area hardest when temperatures begin to drop, but germs can strike at any time. That’s why it’s important to take proactive steps to keep your school clean. Every case of the flu equates to days (if not weeks) of missed school for every student who contracts it--and this is not even accounting for the potential manpower lost should a teacher or administrator become ill.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.Sonlight Cleaning Services knows the value of a clean campus not only for aesthetic reasons but for health reasons as well. Our cleaning professionals will ensure that from doorknob to desk, your school is ready for a year of success! Back to School Preparations

Mon, 08/13/2018 - 20:12 -- Laura M. Pulliam

With the tax free weekend in the rearview mirror, it’s full steam ahead toward the beginning of a new school year. Teachers are getting back into the classroom to ready their domain for the reception of a batch of fresh faces. Administrators are gearing up for a new student roster. Parents are gathering back-to-school uniforms, backpacks, and supplies.

Employees and employers alike are bracing themselves for a certain level of anticipated chaos as children and parents alike get back into the normal rhythm of things after summer break. But before the routine of the next nine months gets underway, it’s nice to take in one more relaxing weekend--a cup of coffee on the patio, extra morning snuggles with the kids or grandkids, one more dip in the pool.

Don’t Forget the Workplace!

Is your place of business ready for the rhythm of another school year? Many folks utilize the summer months to take advantage of their well-earned vacation time. It’s not uncommon to let things “slide” around the office just a little more during the hot months when everything just seems to move a little bit slower.

Now is the right time to start kicking things into high gear so that you can utilize the freshness of a new school year and harness the energy of post-vacation (refreshed!) employees. Is your office set up for success? Whenever I give my home a spring-cleaning, I always notice a boost in my energy and outlook. Did you know you can harness this tendency in the workplace, too?

Your Office Move-Out Cleaning Checklist

Tue, 08/07/2018 - 12:50 -- Laura M. Pulliam

It’s Moving Season in Texas

Whether we’re ready for it or not, late summer has arrived in Texas. The “angry heat” of August is upon us. And unless this is your first season in central Texas, you know what I’m talking about. A mild spring makes way to a suddenly steamy summer, which just seems to continue on until you don’t think you can handle the heat anymore. And then comes August...Google searches for “moving” in Texas peak between late July and early August, ironically the hottest months in the state. Despite mild winters, it seems that late summer (before the start of a new academic year) is still the most popular time to move.

Because household moves typically coincide with a business move, Sonlight Cleaning Services has compiled a handy cleaning checklist for those inevitable office moves. We’re your go-to commercial cleaning service because we’ve been keeping the Dallas/Fort Worth community clean for over thirty years. We’re a trusted name when it comes to keeping commercial buildings, schools, medical facilities, and churches looking their best.If the lease on your building is up and you’re looking to upgrade or change locations, it’s important to keep these to-do’s in mind so that you keep a good reputation in the community and don’t lose your deposit over a dingy workspace!

•             Wash walls

•             Vacuum and deep-clean carpets

(Sonlight Cleaning Services offers extraction carpet cleaning, which can help minimize the indents left in your carpet by heavy pieces of furniture)

•             Sweep, mop, and buff hard floors

How to Choose the Best Cleaning Company

Mon, 07/30/2018 - 13:25 -- Laura M. Pulliam

The web is full of lists proclaiming “top ten” this or “five favorite” that. But when it comes to finding a commercial cleaning company for your business, office building, medical facility, school, or church, how do you find the right company for you? Just like each individual has unique needs, each organization and their facilities have different need as well.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself to analyze your current needs plus a few reasons why Sonlight Cleaning Services might be the right choice for you!

First, how important is it to "shop local"?   Many companies are franchises or branches that are run by out of town or out of state companies. Sonlight Cleaning Services is a family-owned business that has been in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex for over 30 years. Owned and operated by one individual throughout its lifetime, Sonlight offers reliable service. And because we do not franchise, you can be guaranteed a consistent clean no matter where in the metroplex your facility is located.

Second, what is the size of your facility? Some commercial cleaning companies have a high minimum or low maximum square footage. As you compare companies, be sure you know your building’s square footage so you can ensure you are eligible for the services they offer. Sonlight Cleaning Services is experienced in maintaining buildings and campuses from 5,000 to one million square feet. Big or small, we’re here for you!

Third, what services do you need? Be sure to know the limitations of the companies you are researching. Can they take care of your annual or irregular upkeep needs (for example, window washing)? By thinking long-term, you can work with one company for both your everyday janitorial needs and your less frequent cleaning needs. Sonlight Cleaning Services offers janitorial services, power washing, window washing, carpet deep-cleaning, and hard floor care, just to name a few! Simplify your to-do list by looking for a company that offers all of the services your facility needs in a year.

Fourth, what are you looking for in terms of customer service? Sonlight Cleaning Services is committed to building enduring relationships through integrity, honesty and the commitment to treating our customers and staff with the highest level of respect and dignity. We will always make sure our customers are satisfied. We extensively train and thoroughly background check all of our personnel. As a team, we seek to go above and beyond our client’s expectations. Give us a call! You’ll be greeted by one of our team members, not an automated message or answering service.

Forget packages and cookie-cutter approaches. Sonlight Cleaning Services wants to offer you the solutions you need. Let us scale with you as your organization changes and grows! We pride ourselves in creating a maintenance program that is flexible enough to suit your specific needs, at a affordable price. Contact us today--one of our representatives would be happy to help you customize a building maintenance schedule that suits both your needs and your budget.

Hospitality and Visitor Retention in Churches

Fri, 07/20/2018 - 19:07 -- Laura M. Pulliam

In episode 126 of the New Churches Q&A Podcast, hosts Daniel Im, Ed Stetzer, and Todd Adkins spend some time talking about the role of hospitality and suggesting ways that church leaders can encourage visitors to return. One of the examples they specifically mentioned had to do with the upkeep of the church facilities. A particularly memorable--and actionable--message from this particular episode was that, “We should take the biblical virtue of hospitality and put it together at an institutional level.” In speaking about the church’s facilities, they make the stark comparison that “God’s not glorified in your personal hospitality when you invite someone into your home, but give them poor directions, a cold fast-food meal, and a half-hearted conversation.” If we would never do this in our homes, why would we settle for anything less in our churches?

In short, it’s time we take a closer look at our church facilities. If you are a lifelong member of a church, or are the facilities director or trustee for one currently, you may be tempted to overlook certain cleanliness shortfalls. It’s amazing the things we “let slide” in our church facilities that would never be acceptable in our own homes. An important fact to remember, though, is that what you and your members may be quick to forgive will be the first thing a visitor notice’s.

Sonlight Cleaning Service’s mission is to hold ourselves to the highest ethical standards in the way we conduct both our business and personal lives. When it comes to your church’s hospitality, we want to see you excel! Visualize (or better yet, walk through) your church’s facilities. Consider it as though it was your own home.

Would you leave a coffee stain on the carpet? Sonlight Cleaning Services not only offers carpet cleaning but also stain removal and pre-spotting treatment.

Would you be content with dust on every door jamb? Our professional janitorial services staff can take care of that for you.

Would you allow dirt to accumulate along the baseboards? It’s amazing how easily we gloss over these kinds of things in our church. But think about it through a visitor’s eyes--would you be comfortable leaving your child in a classroom full of new people if it looked dirty or dingy?

Would you simply do a “quick mop” if your household toilet overflowed? Or would you clean, disinfect, and deodorize as quickly as possible? Sonlight Cleaning Services is there for all your needs and has experience dealing with flood restoration.

Hospitality is warmth and friendliness, expecting nothing in return. If your space could use a little help in order to be the warmest, friendliest space for welcoming your new guests, give Sonlight Cleaning Services a call! We’d be happy to create a customized cleaning plan that helps your church facilities shine. Request a free estimate!

Tis The Season For Camping

Fri, 07/13/2018 - 13:37 -- Laura M. Pulliam
Have you ever had the desire to escape the hustle and bustle of the work week for a few days away from the chores? To have a peaceful evening under the stars? A relaxed morning with a cup of coffee? If so, you’re not alone. Over 9 million U.S. households are proud recreational vehicle owners and our nation is dotted throughout with more than sixteen-thousand campgrounds. The greater Dallas Fort Worth area alone is home to dozens upon dozens of RV parks and the demand is ever rising.

Once the oversized toys of retirees, RVs are now the popular purchase of individuals in all walks of life. The majority of RV owners are now under age 45 and likely trending downward as families with young children seek the flexible mini-trip lifestyle an RV affords. The RV Industry Association reported 8 consecutive years of sales growth, with 2017 totaling over 500,000 units sold nationwide. As the report goes on to indicate, “The RV industry had a $50 billion economic impact in 2015.” Some of the biggest names in the nation-wide camping business are already reporting that business is the best it’s been in 50+ years. As more and more urban dwellers become weekend warriors, it’s time to make sure that you leave your office in the hands of a professional janitorial service before you go on your next RV excursion, it’s time to bring your A-game.

Call it cause or effect, but it’s kind of funny that I’m writing this blog post from the comforts of my own trailer, a 2018 Coleman FQ17, as my husband plays with my 1-year-old son on the front bed. We’ve visited two campgrounds this trip and I couldn’t help but notice that one of them desperately needed a to be cleaned. Your office or building is just as important because you would not be able to take the time off without the disposable income to pay for your RV and additional camping expenses. Take a close look at the cleanliness of your office before you take that next break. What do your employees and visitors notice about your work environment? Is it clean or does it need to be cleaned? If your current janitorial service is performing at a professional level your office will always make a great first impression. We know this because Sonlight Cleaning has been providing professional commercial janitorial services to businesses in the DFW metro-plex for over 30 years.

With RV-ing on the rise, it should come as no surprise to campground or brick and mortar business owners, you must be mindful of appearances to attract (and keep) a good customer base. Those first impressions could mean the difference between someone choosing to stop at your place of business or the one down the road. Thanks to technology and the ever-present cell phone, if someone doesn’t like the looks of your campground when you are on vacation or your business when you are working, they can just look up the next one down the street! If your building or offices have 5,000 to one million square feet of space that require professional janitorial services give Sonlight Cleaning a call today! We can have one of our experts evaluate your cleaning needs and provide a free estimate.

Five Things You Should Do This Summer Besides Deep-Cleaning Your Office

Tue, 07/03/2018 - 18:06 -- Laura M. Pulliam

Whereas spring seems to be the agreed-upon time of year to clean one’s home, it seems that summer is a popular time to clean one’s office building. I remember working for a CPA in college. Once tax season was done and we had all peeled ourselves off the floor (we ended up there due to sheer exhaustion), we all knew what was next… the annual office deep cleaning.

Even though we dreaded this inevitable scenario, we tried to set our sights high. All the way to the rafters high. Since we were in a historic building, the front and back walls were entirely raw limestone. While beautiful, this rustic look came at the cost of the little critters who made their home in our office during the flurry of the busy work season. The corners were always just messes of cobwebs by the time we got around to cleaning. And that’s just the start. It seems like the rest of the summer was spent playing catch-up on all of the chores we had let slide during the previous nine months.

There has to be a better way. That’s why Sonlight Cleaning Services would like to suggest five things you should do this summer besides deep-cleaning your office.

1. Go to the Pool. Seriously any pool will do. Even the kiddie pool in the front yard with your kids beats staying late at the office. Let us do the dusting while you take a dip!

2. Visit the Fort Worth Stockyards. Things are always hoppin' (or maybe rather "moovin") down at the Fort Worth Stockyards. Watch the cattle drive at 11:30 am and or 4:00 pm every day! You can sit back and enjoy the drum of hoofbeats down the cobblestone streets while we remove all signs of the herd of people who have traversed your office hallways.

3. Check out the Dallas World Aquarium. No matter your age, there is something to see and learn at the Dallas World Aquarium. Besides, wouldn't you rather be staring at the water rush behind a darting black goby than water rushing down the windows you just cleaned. Leave the window washing to Sonlight Cleaning Service and go enjoy the sea inspired delights! You deserve it.

4. Hit the road for a state park day-trip. Cedar Hill State Park is situated just between and below Dallas and Fort Worth. From camping to fishing to swimming, this is a great park for offering you a break from the city. Instead of breathing on those cleaning chemicals as you scrub and scour the office, breathe in the fresh air as you explore over 1,200 acres of hike and bike trails!

5. Take your staff to lunch. It's amazing how much a meal together can boost moral and it shouldn't surprise you to hear that asking your team to tackle toilet cleaning does the opposite. Leave the toilets to us and go enjoy some quality time with the people that make your business a success. Contacts us Today!! So that one of our experts can evaluate your cleaning needs for a free estimate.

Special Cleaning Considerations During Drought

Wed, 06/27/2018 - 18:09 -- Laura M. Pulliam

The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex has received only four inches of rain in the last three months. And with average temperatures during that time reaching well into the 90s, it’s safe to say that it’s going to be a hot and dry summer. When temperatures soar and the landscape is looking dry, there are two main (and somewhat different) proactive steps you need to take in order to ensure your facilities remain at their best. These two steps involve creating an enticing environment and dealing with additional particle pollution.

First, think about visiting your business from your customers’ perspective. When it is especially hot outside, people tend to avoid any unnecessary errands and appointments. But if you run a business, you rely on regular commerce, regardless of the weather. By thinking about your business from your customer’s perspective, you can get creative when it comes to creating a hospitable environment. What are some things you can do to create an appealing atmosphere so that your customers will look forward to visiting your facilities? For example, I can recall visiting a hotel during a particularly hot summer that offered a refreshing glass of cucumber mint water the moment I walked in the door--talk about hospitality! Maybe this specific example doesn’t fit your business, but there are plenty of other ideas out there that can be tailor-fit to your specific needs.

Second, remember to account for the additional dust that will be generated due to dry conditions. It may be tempting to think that added airborne particles due to drought won’t be an issue if you’re located in the city, far away from ploughed fields and parched landscapes, but did you know dust and dirt can travel across continents and even oceans under the right conditions? That means a few miles from the rural areas surrounding DFW to your front doorstep is only a short road trip for dust! Particle pollution is a problem not only for the cleanliness of your hard floors, carpets, windows, and walls, it is actually a matter of health. During drought conditions, physicians report seeing more breathing-related cases (such as asthma and allergies) than during wetter seasons.

As the chance of rain decreases, particle pollution increases. And as particle pollution increases, so will the likelihood that these particles will attempt to make their home in your place of business. Sonlight Cleaning Services stands ready to keep these drought-induced invaders at bay… so call us today for a free estimate!

All about Grout

Mon, 06/25/2018 - 13:02 -- Laura M. Pulliam

Ceramic tile is a popular flooring choice. Made from clay that has been molded and kiln-fired, it boasts both beauty and function. It can compliment almost any facility style from classic to modern to rustic. It can add visual interest and personality--everything from terracotta to black-and-white patterned made the list of 2018 tile trends. Additionally, tile has long been known as a great choice in warm climates. And with temperatures in the Dallas-Fort Worth area frequently pushing triple digits, it’s no wonder that this flooring is a consistent winner among the other available options.

When ceramic tile is given appropriate attention and care, it can last for half a century or more, making it an excellent choice for community mainstays such as churches, medical offices, and other places of business. But ceramic tile is not cheap. Because of its lifespan, it must be thought of as an investment. And as with any investment, a little care goes a long way. Ceramic tile can look fabulous for years to come if properly cared for. One of the most important components of that care routine must be special attention to the grout between the tiles.

Grout is a paste-like mortar that fills in the gaps between each tile. Often it is chosen to match the tile, but sometimes it can even be a contrasting color (for example, a popular choice in recent years has been light-colored tile surrounded by a darker grout). Grout typically has a shorter lifespan than the tile itself, with a typical lifespan of 10-20 years--or less than half the life of the tile itself.

Since grout is the “weakest link” when it comes to ceramic tile flooring, Sonlight Cleaning Services understands that this aspect of your flooring requires special attention. We use an acid-based solution that is specifically formulated for ceramic tile and grout as well as a professional hot water extraction method with a specialized tool for removing soil build-up on the tile surface as well as the surrounding grout. Though grout can be replaced, it is best to do this as infrequently as possible. Any time you are forced to remove grout, you are at risk of damaging the surrounding tile (which may then also need to be replaced, costing you both time and money).

By taking good care of the grout, you are extending the lifespan of your flooring as well as boosting the visual appearance of your facility--that’s what we call a win-win! Contact Sonlight Cleaning Services for your free quote today!

The Importance of Cleanliness in Financial Institutions

Thu, 06/14/2018 - 13:47 -- Laura M. Pulliam

In the recent past, I visited two CPA offices in different buildings. While both CPAs were pleasant to work with and boasted a similar value, looking back, I realized that I would gladly revisit one over the other. I suppose I should add that both of these visits occurred during tax season so, understandably, neither office was particularly tidy--you got the distinct feeling that you were stepping onto a basketball court in the middle of a game! But despite similar goings on in each office, the two left different impressions.

The first office, though clearly caught up in the frenetic pace of tax season, was inviting. The second office, on the other hand, had a generally disagreeable vibe. It’s not that one building was brand new while the other was derelict. From the architecture, I’d wager that both buildings were erected around the same time. It’s not even that one had recently been remodeled while the other hadn’t… in fact, their carpeting appeared to be from the same “bygone era.”

The difference came down to cleanliness. One building sparkled while the other seemed, on the whole, a little dingy.

It’s funny, isn’t it, how a little grime can make an entire building look tired? As I think back, there are a few suggestions I would make to that second CPA… and Sonlight Cleaning Services could help him with every one:

1.    Power wash the exterior walls--It was clear from the building’s appearance that somewhere in its past, the gutters had clogged, causing water to run down the exterior walls and leaving black streaks on every corner. This made the building look much older than it actually was and a good power washing would have made an impressive difference.

2.    Clean the windows--The building was situated next to the highway, so I’m sure the view was nothing to brag about. But the fact that the blinds were all drawn made the room dim and uninviting. Even if the view isn’t great, a little sunlight can do a lot of good for the desirability of the space and for people’s general mood (especially important when talking about money matters)!

3.    Deep-clean the carpets--As already mentioned, the carpeting in both buildings was of similar vintage but I noticed a marked difference in the condition. To the second financial institution, I would suggest that routine carpet care be added after an initial deep-clean. Offices that host clients get a lot more foot traffic than a private office. Say you see only 5 clients per day… that’s 50 feet (in addition to your own) bringing in dust, dirt, and pollen on a weekly basis! You can see why, in offices in particular, regular floor care is of utmost importance.

4.    Don’t neglect the stairwells--This one shocked me. It was as though the stairs hadn’t been swept since the building’s opening day! Okay, this may be a slight exaggeration, but all I can say is please, please, please remember how many people utilize your building’s stairs and take this into consideration when planning out your building’s janitorial needs.

5.    Take care of that musty smell!--Some older buildings just have a particular odor. As long as it’s faint (like that of an old book), it’s probably nothing to worry about and an air fragrance machine will take care of the issue. But if the odor is persistent, it’s probably time to find the source: Is it your carpets (for example, was there a neglected water leak)? Is excessive condensation collecting on the windows? Do the air filters simply need changing? With Sonlight Cleaning Services, there’s no need to go out of your way to find a company to perform these kinds of minor maintenance and handyman services.

No matter the age or the condition of your financial institution, we’ve got you covered. What are you waiting for? Contact Sonlight Cleaning Services today!
